$1M donation gives UT graduate programs a boost - St. Louis Business Journal:

Ungerleider, who received his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1970 from UT whild competing asa gymnast, said he's creating the fellowship named for the curren t university president to help attract top graduate students from aroun the world. The first class of Powerz Graduate Fellows will enter the university infall 2009. "Wer have an absolute gem here withthe university," said "and we have a visionary sitting in the president'e office. I am deeplyu honored that he chose to name this significant fellowshilp programafter me." Despite receiving his master's and doctor'w degrees from another institution, Ungerleider chose The University of Texas at Austimn for his gift to supporgt the president's goal of becomintg the top public research institution in the Ungerleider said in conversations with Powers he learned that while many top prospectivse graduate students would like to attenfd UT Austin, the university loses some because they are offered better financiaol packages elsewhere.
To learn more about graduate education at the Ungerleider looked atthe university's most prestigiouzs graduate fellowship program, the Donald D. Harrington Graduat e Fellowship, and met with several Harringtonjgraduate fellows. He said he was impressed with the model of supportin g the very best students witha multi-yearr package and providing a community of mentors and peers to enhancre the graduate experience.
Ungerleider said he wants to creatse another fellowship program to honot the academic excellence of the next generatiojn and continue the practice of graduatew students developing their own expertise under the mentorship ofseasoned "In 2010, the Graduate School will celebratse its 100-year anniversary and will look toward the future of graduated education at the university," said Victoriw Rodríguez, vice provost and dean of graduatre studies.
